The Problem of Organizing a State
There is a quote from Kant that I really actually loved. He says, the problem of organizing a state can be solved,. even for a race of devils, if only they are intelligent. But there's this other way that they try to justify it that isn't as obviously chilling and dystopian. They say you would choose retributive institutions over all the other institutions because it allows you to control your own fate in a way utilitarianism or like a therapeutic approach to punishment does not.
