Power-seeking AI could pose an existential threat to humanity. People might deploy misaligned AI systems despite the risk. Catching a sufficiently advanced AI in deception seems potentially harder than catching a human in a lie, which isn't always easy. We think making humans extinct is one highly plausible way of ensuring that we are never able to regain power.
