Hollywood and the Black Actress Actors
Hattie Cohn was released from her contract by warner brothers. She would find work as an independent contractor, mostly playing maids. When it became public that black audiences had been denied access to the first studio film in which a black performer bemoaned present day racism, there was much outcry. The n a c p launched aggressive campaign to get the studios to agree to provide more and less stereotypical roles for african american actors.
