The House of Commons has 650 elected MPs and an upper house, the House of Lords. First-past-the-post essentially means 650 different elections in different parts of the country. It is simply the case that whoever comes top of the ballot in each constituency is elected as an MP. The upside to this is there's a very strong relationship between each MP and their constituency. On the downside, however, it makes the House of Commons unrepresentative of the election result as a whole. Because of the first- Past-The-Post system is a winner-takes-all system. So the proportion of seats allocated to each party has nothing to do with the proportion of votes they
