Cameron has talked about how Avatar began as a responsibility for him to find something to push the envelope. Cameron at one point wanted to release Avatar exclusively in 3D with no option for 2D. He also plays around with high frame rate when it aids the scene, like in action. And then when it's a dialogue scene, it'll drop down to 24 frames.
