The Frankfurt School's Interrogating of the Locals of Meaning
Karl Marx believed in something called dialectical materialism, which is that there are these two opposing forces. And so then the Frankfurt school wants to take all of these ideas and apply them not just to political uprising or political theory, but to culture. In other words, how does the ruling classes use art as a means of control? That's what the Frankfurt School was doing. They were examining things like jazz. Think about Hollywood and the starlets. How they would use things like pornography and the sexual identity of the starlet to still control the people.
