The first three volumes of the truly tasteless joke books all appeared on the new york times best sellar list at the same time. J finley is a professor of africana studies at pomona college whose work focuses on humor. The most jarring, notable thing about these book is the bigoted humour. They were thinly veiled bigotry, basically a jocular way for white people in particular to express resentment and anx ties that were lurking under the surface.
