The Importance of Caesar's Name
When you say Caesar, you mean Julius Caesar. You don't mean Caesar Augustus. You means Julius Caesar. So Caesar doesn't become a title until after Julius Caesar. And even today, if you talk about the Russian leaders of the 19th century, there's Tsars. That's Caesar. He knew it was consequential and that everything would change as a result of that action. If Julius Caesar just hands in his eagle standard, his command of his legion and walks in empty-handed, almost metaphorically writing in on a donkey knowing that he's going to die,. well, maybe the Republic lives on for years and years more.
