Reconstruction, Revisionism, in the American Conservative
i'd like to take it in this direction for a few minutes at least, of the fact that there is a sense on the right that a irreconcilable, exubstantial question of what the american nation consists of has been called again. There is a revival of a historiography of the civil war and of reconstruction, which treats the fleeting possibility of multi racial democracy as a problem. One of the most explicit renderings of this anxiety is by helen andrews, who wrote for the american conservative an attack on w e b de boys's magisterial work on reconstructing American history.
