The Path Dependency Problem in Tesler

Tom standage: Car industry has had more than a century to get very, very good at building internal combustion engines. Do you think that path dependency has gotten stronger or weaker overtime? i could imagine that it would get stronger. On the other hand, as technology gets more complex, and there's more leverage in creating new technologies, i could imagine it being weaker.
