When vesterman showed up in late june, the catholic and royal army was bogged down in the ultimately failed siege of nant. Of the six thousand vestermen had led into the city, two thousand were either killed in the fighting or in the subsequent massacres. After this defeat, vesterman was naturally ordered to come back and face the tribunal, but amazingly enough, he was acquitted a second time.
