The piece is written in b flat minor, one of the darkest possible keys. The music never changes speed or goes above a simple forte marking. It simply unwinds and leaves us off. This is the first time where the choir and the orchestra become somewhat at odds. These are two different ideas they are trying to communicate. In the end, they understand each he. And we return to that music of stern joy.
