I was holding hands with my father as he was dying. And after he died, we were emptying his little apartment in Philadelphia. He'd been a tyrant and wife-batterer who developed some of the first heart lung machines. The superintendent said there's a battered women's shelter next block over. We all just started to smile like the perfect justice of it. I don't dream about him particularly, but there I was.
