The History and Economics of Whaling

Hester Blum is a professor of English at the Pennsylvania State University. Melville was descended from relatively well off and well-named families on both sides. He spent about three or four years total on whaling ships, although he continually deserted them. Much of the novel is about what it's like to work on a 19th century whaling ship.
