"I really ended up looking at it as sort of scaffolding in a way like to scaffold the story and also just someone. I think he wanted someone to kind of play in his sandbox," says director Guillermo del Toro. "To me that's part of the decision making process in the beginning is can I see myself in this like could I write this do I get who these people are?"
