The fourth and fifth century has a lot going on in terms of saint images performing miracles being used to defend orthodox theology. The council seems to suggest that since images have good and holy uses, how can we say that the apostles would have permitted such good things? It's saying basically that given how these images were used to defend apostolic doctrines, why would the apostles then somehow denigrate images?"
