What Kafka Can Do for You?
GORD was too push-oriented, and we weren't keeping track of how the resources and buffering of data was happening in between. Kafka allowed us to basically just have a side-along process that was consuming the stream and occasionally snapshotting because it is nice for people to be able to catch up more quickly. In some sense, the answer to my question of where is the magic is, there is no magic. It's just a bunch of engineering that you need to do in order to build a message queue.
