The Impact of the Emancipation Proclamation on African Americans
The Emancipation Proclamation was not enforceable. It wasn't until Union soldiers show up with force of arms to make sure this law was actually, so that gets into the whole mess of reconstruction and then the removal of Union troops from the south. So one of the things you talked about in the documentary was the impact it had on the enslaved African Americans in Galveston when they see these Union soldiers land,. including thousands of them who were African American. And talk a little bit about what impact that had on people to see black American soldiers in uniform enforcing this emancipation.
