The vocal cords are just some strands of connective tissue that cover the length of the opening of the larynx. And obviously when you breathe or bring air in or out, I should... ...more likely when you breathe out, you can push out across these vocal cords and create sound. The range has to do with the length and the thickness of these vocal cords. Males tend to have thicker vocal cords, so their range tends to be more of a deepness.
