He dismisses all these charges of magic that are levelled at him as mostly being either religious in nature or scientific in nature. Even philosophers owned mirrors, ye, right. That doesn't mean you're obsessed with your appearance. He's constantly undermining the idea that he has this magical power because it doesn't make sense in context.
