The ancient israelite priesthood functioned in three concentric circles. If you were born into the tribe of levi, you were by definition a levite. Levites who were descended from aaron were called aronic or aronite priests. Within that ironic priestly circle would be one final circle which was designated as the line of high priests. The first born of aaron served as the ultimate mediator between israel and god.
