The select menu element is hard to customize and it's not flexible enough for the types of things that people end up using it for. The idea here is that they have a select menu, which is actually currently implemented behind a flag in Chromium. And all of these things do feel like a little bit more real of a navigation than you could still get that mobile UI native element use case out of it without having to shoehorn in a select list for something that it doesn't actually fit in.
