Somerset's Canals
Somerset's canals are six miles long and six feet wide, opening up to 30 feet when they reach the Scubernong River. The job of those 80 enslaved Native Africans to hand-dig this canal was a project that started in 1786. There are stories of individuals who were too tired to climb out of the canal, and their bodies were removed the next morning.
