Nicholas Tanner: It would be very hard to find someone more cosmopolitan, more Catholic or universal. He was fearless in approaching anything like he had no fear about potentially stepping into dangerous territory. I often see it this way, a paradigm perhaps for the future, for how we see ourselves as Christians and have to become ecumenical. But the other side of that multiculturalism is definitely learning to dialogue but also learn to be rooted and grounded.
