In 1862, Andrew Carnegie joined a group of investors to found the Columbia oil company. He was earning more than $45,000 a year from this and all his other investments compared with just $2400 from his railroad salary. In 1870, he met JP Morgan's dad on a trip to England where he meets Henry Bessemer who would go on to invent steel.
