Since all this seems to have stemmed from the death of the traveller, i can't help wondering if both phenomena were really different manifestations of the same thing. The big argument i can think of against this view is that the destructive stuff stopped following an exorcism. There were also prayers and spiritual exercises and at least one other mass that was said. And so the fact and exorcism occurred in proximity to the cessation of the destructive phenomenon could be a coincidence. For, you know, since the spiritual world goes beyond our ability to fully invision the actual answer may have been even more subtle and more complicated than the possibilities i have laid out.
