Penicillin and the Game of Survival
Penicillin is such an amazing molecule, right? It's one of the seminal discoveries of the 20th century. Penicillin enters bacteria and it prevents them making a very specific cross-link. Without that, then the cells become incredibly fragile and burst. Most antibiotics come from bacteria fighting one another in the game of survival. Humans are very lazy chemists - we go around eating plants and animals because we can't make the raw materials ourselves.
