The idea of a republic or democracya participatory governmence is actually a wild proposition, which is that a huge number of people who don't know each other, who want different things, can sublimate their desire and difference to co ordinate with each other like that. The few times throughout history that a republic or a democracy emerged, they're actually really kind of worth studying. It was following the kind of greek enlightenment that both had a very high value on classical education for everyone. And then there was also the value of the socratic dialogue.
