Mediaeval christian writers said attila was god's blunt instrument used to punish those christians whose faith had lapsed. In this way, Attila was like the philistines or the moabites who were occasionally raised up by god to punish a community whose devotion had slipped. But it's important to know that atila never called himself the scourge of god or believed himself to be god's punishment. Why would he believe that his role on this earth was to punish christians on behalf of their god?
