The term transvestite was coined by Magnus Hirschfeld, a German sexologist. Transvestites are people who live as their gender at a time when there's no medical transition. In the U.S., they formed friendship groups and sororities around clothing in the 1930s. They organized their relationship to gender around clothing - it wasn't superficial.
