By Christmas 1942, there'd be these sort of starving skeletal men coming out of the gloom in Wehrmacht and trying to claw their way onto an aircraft. They were kicked off by the air crews because they just couldn't take any more weight. There's a story which I mentioned the book about a Heinke 1-11 that was turning round to take off and it's got wounded on board. The pilot realizes there's some problem with the rudder. It got a bit jammed. So he asked his gunner to just go and wrench, try and kick the rudder,. you know, just thumbpick with his boot to try and free the rudder mechanism. And as
