Tolstoy is quite critical, both of sort of frivolous masculinity and frivolous femininity. The most shocking and repulsive aspect of the novel to me is that she abandons her son. For Anna, it becomes the end in itself. And a man wrapped up in himself makes a very small package, indeed,. I say.
