The Rabbi, the Rabbi, Is Not a Priest.
Rabbis were teachers in the days of babylon, when jewish community was undergoing a significant change. In exile they had to survive by transmitting law and tradition into foreign environment. This is where idea of rabbi comes in - he's not a priest but lay person who leads worship service. Rabbi based on skill rather than 'heredity' as we know it today.
