The Importance of Asylum Law in the Trump Administration
Title 42 was passed in 1944 to prevent the introduction of communicable diseases into the United States. The Trump administration invoked it on March 20th, 2020 during a meningitis outbreak. That same day, Border Patrol began expelling individuals who arrive at the US Mexico border without giving them the opportunity to seek asylum. Title 42 has persisted for much longer under Biden's watch two years and four months than it did under Trump,. But we'll get to that part later.
