Commonplace Books

Historians have of understanding the kind of news that reached different parts of the country are various surviving commonplace books. They were essentially scrap books of interesting information kept and carefully, lovingly maintained by families and passed on from generation to generation. The personal letter was a key way of getting information. There were courses on maintaining a good commonplace book.
