The way this kind of family systemically deals with maybe like hard feelings and creating quote unquote boundaries around them is by keeping secrets. I think that that being a parallel that they were both trying to protect each other from the very thing that they needed to do to heal from the trauma is the part of the story we didn't see, he says. "It's very rare that family secrets all of a sudden stops being something that's a part of the system"
