The Beginning of the End of the Cattle Economy
In 1873 an engineer in the east patented the design of barbed wire which could be put up fairly quickly and cheaply. It was light but because of its sharp points which could tear into flesh, it would effectively deter or even kill cattle who tried to push through it. This provided a new way of controlling these free roaming cattle who had been just wandering around on the prairie. With this new disruption it forced some ranchers to look for more distant more remote higher elevation lands where the cattle could still roam and graze freely.
