Self interest is very easily extended to the family, tribe and village. It's more difficult to push it beyond those borders. Beyond a certain point, it really requires a monumental effort of education in order to achieve that extension. The presence of silent partners, rain, suffering, prospect of pleasure are the motors for cultures. They also monitor the success or failure of inventions so if you invent a medication to treat my pain, ah, and i take it, but i don't get better, what happens? You're going to throw away that medication and think of giving me another. So once again, feelings serve to motivate, but then they stay on to arbiter and to disian critiq
