The aim of the fumbling is to distort the regular array of molecules in crystalline ice and squeeze out the usual order. The pounding really transforms the ice into something new, into something that is amorphous. And then amazingly, the density increases as well. We get the density similar to the density of liquid water - this was completely unexpected.
