Billy Gossett on the Guinness Brewery
William Sealy Gossett, better known as student. Other of the t-test, was arguably Ireland's most famous statistician. He couldn't really get Pearson's stuff to work with smaller samples they'd had access to within the Guinness Brewery. So he had to think beyond that and build a model that allows for sample-to-sample variability in the estimate of the concentration of yeast.
