Bessie's father arranges for her to marry Jack Strang, heir to the Crown Heights warehouses. But Bessie says she is not in love with him and they part ways. He winds up getting a job at the PT Morse shipyard as an apprentice burner. In 1924 he became an apprentice to Edward Doc Tate, a master burglar and safe cracker.
