The Trans-Siberian Railway
The trans-Siberian railway is a central artery, bringing life to barren Siberia. Trains deliver immigrants, people in search of land and a fresh start. Prisoners, criminals and political enemies are sent by Stalin's communist regime to gulags in the north from where most people never make a return journey. The first two decades of the 20th century see constant conflict. From hostilities with Japan to World War I, a revolution in civil war,. Its strategic importance is clear, and so work to maintain and develop the line never stops - even as the reins of power change hands again and again.
