The History of Co-Wurst Sterilizations

The first practice was so prevalent in the south that it was nicknamed a Mississippi appendectomy. In his opinion on Ralph v. Weinberger, Judge Gerhard Woll wrote that federal programs had funded the sterilization of 100,000 to 150,000 low income women during the previous few years. Even though California banned forced sterilizations in 1979, numerous women described being coerced and pressured into the procedure while incarcerated. And in July 2017, News Channel 5 in Tennessee allowed incarcerated people who either got of aectomy or a contraceptive implant to get a 30-day credit toward their jail time.
