Is the Existence of the Commercial Aircraft Industry Getting Worse?

The commercial aircraft industry operates at what could charitably be described as a glacial pace. I feel like everything's picking up steam much more quickly than you would expect if there wasn't a realization that the existence of the industry is being called into question. The time from contract award to first flight of the sustainable flight demonstrator under this NASA contract is going to be five years, not certified.
