Is Consciousness a Part of Artificial Intelligence?
David Wheeler: Do you have a strong feeling about whether consciousness will just be some of the property of large neural networks in learning or some fundamentally different thing that we're not even approaching? He says he majored in symbolic systems at Stanford, which is kind of cognitive science artificial intelligence with a focus on more of the old school AI. Wheeler: We don't actually know any of that. We have a bunch of interesting theories and models, but we don't know. And so people would say, well, this is what consciousness is. The machine can't certainly do it.
