In 1922, inspired by events in Russia, Mao joins the fledgling Chinese Communist Party. In 1924, the communists have blindsided by a turn of events they didn't see coming. Their bitter rivals, the nationalists, snatch power and establish themselves as China's government. By this time, Mao is a fully fledged left-wing activist who firmly believes that change in society must be driven by the people.
