Gilbert Stewart made several of these paintings and one of them was in the White House. Dolly understood the symbolic value of what would happen if this painting was destroyed. She instructed several of the enslaved men who were in the house including Paul Jennings to basically break the frame take out the canvasRoll it up and then she sent it with one of the men who was there to sort of escort her for safekeeping.
