The novel often seems to be a very finely woven tapestry of natural signs and traditional folklore and supernatural symbols. Ed is our sort of guide is relatively unreliable really she's very good at reading the natural signs, but she has a tendency to misinterpret or exaggerate some of the detail that's going on around her.
