The validation has been done using specific protocols. If you want a really precise threshold, one that you can perhaps compare this month to next month after you change your training, then you want to do a ramp. Those long ramps or constant intervals where you let's say eight or ten minutes at a certain power go by are very helpful. But you don't want to necessarily see, although you'll get a result on alpha one, but it may not be as precise is where you get a heart rate goes up and then it steady state for a while before it plateaus.
