The Milky Way

Astronomers had the idea that we exist in infinite space. The result was a very popular view, according to which the milky way was the only thing in the cosmos. In other words, the physical universe is an infinite expanse of space and the onlything in it is the flat, circular disk of stars from our solar system. As they say on the t v show babylon five, we're all alone in the night.
